Tretiva is prescribed to treat severe type of acne known as nodular acne that has not responded to any other acne treatments. Nodular acnes are swollen lumps that are formed due to large amounts of sebum (facial oil) production. Tretiva is a form of vitamin A that decreases sebum production and thus prevents your face from permanent scarring. This drug belongs to a class of chemical compounds known as retinoids.

Dosage
The dosage of Tretiva prescribed to each patient will vary.  Always follow your physician’s instructions and/or the directions on the prescription drug label.

Missed Dose
If your physician has instructed or directed you to take Tretiva medication in a regular schedule and you have missed a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, instead skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the doses unless otherwise directed.

Overdose
Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect overdose of Tretiva, call your doctor or poison control center immediately. Some of the overdose symptoms of this drug include loss of balance, vomiting, stomach ache, flushing of face, and headache.

Side Effects
Like other medicines, Tretiva can cause some side effects. If they do occur, the side effects of Tretiva are most likely to be minor and temporary. However, some may be serious and may require the individual to inform the doctor or visit the nearest hospital immediately.
It is pertinent to note that side effects of Tretiva cannot be anticipated. If any side effects of Tretiva develop or change in intensity, the doctor should be informed as soon as possible.
Tretiva can cause birth defects, bone and muscle problems, abdomen problems, hearing and vision problems, painful swallowing, dark urine, rectal bleeding, severe heartburn, dizziness, and severe headache. This is not a complete list of all side effects. Do concur with your doctor and follow his directions completely when you are taking Tretiva.
