By blocking acid production in the stomach Protonix is used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This medicine is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and may be used in combination with antibiotics including amoxicillin or clarithromycin that treat certain types of ulcers. Additionally, it may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Directions:
Swallow the medicine whole - do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing. If your doctor has also prescribed the use of antacids, you may also take this medicine with them. Store this medicine away from heat and light and at room temperature. Take the full course of this medicine, even if you feel better after a few days. Should you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible unless it is close to the time for your next dose, in that case, skip the missed dose of generic Protonix and resume the regular schedule, do not take two doses at once.
Cautions:
If your symptoms persist and do not improve, or they become worse, check with your doctor. Continue with your doctor and laboratory appointments while on this medicine. Your lab results may be affected by the use of this medicine (e.g., false positive urine screen for THC), therefore advise laboratory personnel and your doctors of your use this medicine. Prior to taking any new medicine, prescriptive or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. If you are a woman and plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of using this medicine during pregnancy. As it is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast milk, it is advised to check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby of taking this medicine while breast feeding.
Side Effects:
There are some side effects that may go away during treatment; these include headache, dizziness, diarrhea, or nausea. Check with your doctor if they continue or are bothersome, however, contact your doctor immediately if you experience swelling of hands, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness or rash.
