Risperdal 4 mg

Risperdal is an antipsychotic medication. It is an "atypical antipsychotic". It works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.
Risperdal is used to treat schizophrenia and symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression). It is also used in autistic children to treat symptoms of irritability.

How it works:
How Risperdal really work is still a mystery after these many years. Since schizophrenia is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, Risperdal works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain. Risperdal is believed to work in the brain to control the action of two main neurotransmitters – dopamine and serotonin. In simpler words, Risperdal treatment restores dopamine activity in the brain.

Side effects:
Risperdal side effects are many and varied, ranging from mild to severe. The milder side effects include an allergic reaction to Risperidone. Serious side effects may occur such as fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck, tremor (uncontrolled shaking), trouble swallowing; or feeling light-headed, fainting. Other milder side effects may include mild restlessness, drowsiness, or tremor, sleepiness, dreaming more than usual, blurred vision, dizziness or headache, weight gain, problems with urination, nausea, dry mouth, constipation; or decreased sex drive, or difficulty having an orgasm. This medication may cause heart failure, sudden death, or pneumonia in older adults with dementia-related conditions. Consult your doctor immediately if any of such side effects become fatal. Ask your doctor to change or move you to alternatives or a lower dosage before these turn dangerous. Alcohol consumption alongside this medication may also cause worsening of Risperdal side effects.

Warnings:
Risperdal could lead to death of elderly patients who have dementia and so it should not be prescribed for treating this particular condition. Risperdal should be taken exactly as per specified dose and even the slightest overdose can worsen symptoms. This medication can lead to your body becoming overheated or dehydrated and so you should always drink plenty of water during treatment. If you have any kidney, liver or heart disease than clarify your condition to your doctor before you start treatment.
